How to Find Profitable New Keywords

This article was written by Ted Dhanik.

Keywords are one of the driving factors behind a successful campaign. Once you have found an offer you like, and a banner that converts well, targeting keywords helps narrow your audience. Proper keyword choices lead to less money wasted on irrelevant clicks.

Research

Start with the broadest possible terms and narrow your selections from there. This helps you identify and categorize your business, useful for display advertising that uses categories to deliver traffic. The more you know about how your customers search for your products, the better off for you. Write from the top of your head first, then use a keyword tool to try and identify new opportunities. Don’t be afraid to try different combinations either. You might discover a big source of untapped traffic for pennies.

Get Specific

It’s assumed that you know what your audience is looking for, but the more specific you get with your keyword lists the better for you. If your audience is looking for fleece-lined slippers, buying traffic for “shoes” or “slippers” isn’t going to help you. You might try “fleece slippers” or “insulated slippers” instead. This way you get your ad closer what the potential customer is actually looking for. When they search for fleece slippers and they see your page, you’re halfway to the sale.

Keyword Groupings

You should also include the keywords you are bidding for in your banner advertising. This seems like a no-brainer, but it’s easy to test yourself out of keywords if you see something working. In situations like these, it’s best to divide your ads into different groups where you can track similar keywords without muddling your results.
